The criminal justice systems is complex, even for those who have spent years of their life trying to understand it. For those who have little legal training, criminal charges can be especially stressful. In fact, a Texas father may now be wondering about his legal options after he was arrested following an incident that allegedly involved drunk driving.
The incident that led to the man’s arrest is said to have occurred on a day in late October. While it is unclear what initially attracted police attention, police say that the 37-year-old father, driving a tractor-trailer, led them on a chase that lasted an hour. Reports claim that the chase spanned three countries and just under 40 miles, and the man was driving at 80 mph.
Police claim that the man only came to a stop after the truck’s bumper broke away. They allegedly found a container of alcohol that was open and cold as well as an additional bottle of beer in the refrigerator of the truck. The man’s two children and his wife were reportedly in the vehicle at the time. Despite the reports of the alcohol in the vehicle and a failed field sobriety test, the man’s blood alcohol content at the time of the arrest is unclear.
In addition to the drunk driving charge, the man is charged with aggravated assault as police claim that he attempted to run them off the road. Unfortunately, the man must now make several decisions that will ultimately have a significant impact on the rest of his life. Foremost is whether to fight the charges in court or to plead guilty. Because of the complexity of the process he faces in Texas, he may choose to hire an experienced criminal defense attorney to guide him through the decisions he must make.
